How it works

Hospice is a service, not a place.

When someone starts hospice, the agency you choose sends nurses, aides, a social worker, and a chaplain to wherever that person lives. Here, that’s the house.

Our caregivers keep doing everything they were already doing — personal care, meals, medications, company. The hospice team adds to that, managing comfort and symptoms and bringing whatever equipment is needed. The two teams talk to each other directly, so you’re not stuck in the middle passing messages back and forth.

What stays the same

The same room, the same faces.

For someone who’s dying, familiar surroundings are a real comfort. For someone with dementia, a move at this stage can be genuinely harmful. Staying put is very often the kindest option there is.

By the time hospice starts, a lot of families have spent months being schedulers, nurses, and advocates. One of the quieter gifts of this arrangement is that it hands those jobs back to the professionals.

You get to sit with them and hold their hand instead of managing their care. That’s worth a great deal, and it’s hard to arrange at home.
